Meet The Governors

The Very Reverend Matt Thompson

The Very Reverend Matt Thompson is the Dean of Birmingham. He has extensive experience as a school governor in a variety of schools, primary and secondary; church and community; maintained, voluntary aided, academy trusts and the independent sector.

Timothy Bond

Timothy is a practicing primary school class teacher and senior leader in Birmingham with a wide variety of experience working in inner city schools and shire schools with a focus on music education, English and school leadership. He is also a regional CPD and Training Manager for an internationally award winning curriculum for Music Education.

Tim has been part of assessment and test design on national levels of the English Curriculum at both KS1 and KS2. Tim’s musical background is as a choral singer, specialising in Church Music.

Tim studied for a BA (Hons) in Primary Education in Music (Voice and Piano) and Post Graduate Certificate in Secondary Music Education. Tim is a Diocesan Appointed Governor and has been both a Staff Governor and Community Governor at schools in Staffordshire.  Tim has always done some form of community work, including Independent Panel for Police Custody Visiting and School Governorship.

Steve Tomlinson

Steve is a Foundation Governor appointed by the Diocese in 2012/3.  At the time he was Churchwarden of Emmanuel Wylde Green.  The then Diocesan Director of Education was invited to preach one Sunday and said that the Diocese were looking for new school governors for the church schools that were about to convert to academies.  They were looking for people with business skills, such as finance, project management, contracts and procurement, which the new academies would need as many of these activities passed from LEA control to the individual academies.  Steve had recently retired from 42 years of full-time work as a railway signal engineer.  After 25 years with British Rail, the privatisation process enabled him to learn new commercial, financial and change-management skills as his employment transitioned to the private sector. Steve felt he now had the time and relevant skills to offer to support an academy and was invited to join the governing body of St George’s.  Steve became the Chair of the Finance Committee, an important role when St George’s was a free-standing academy, and subsequently, the Vice-Chair of the LAB after the school joined BDMAT. He remains in this role at the present.

Rev'd Alison Cozens
The Rev'd Alison Cozens is an ex official Governor. Rev'd Alison was licensed as Priest in Charge of St George's Church of England Parish in Newtown on 18th February, 2018.
In Leicester Rev'd Alison worked closely with the five state primary schools in her parish, welcoming the staff and children to visit the Church and learn about Christianity especially at Christmas and Easter.
Here in Birmingham the staff and children of St George's Academy have visited the Church on many occasions and explored the common link with our patron, St George, and the British values that we all uphold.'
