‘Growing together in Newtown' - Lifelong Aspirations, Lifelong Prospects

Collective Worship

Collective worship is an expression of our Christian vision. Our regular Christian ‘welcoming’ shows the children our Christian identity and how our school lives because of our values and vision. Following a liturgical pattern, every worship follows the structure of gather, engage, respond and send. Every worship begins with children entering to music, and the three candles are lit to represent the Trinity and  to welcome the class to worship .The set-up of the table at the front of our hall has the relevant liturgical colours of the cloth and the presence of the Bible. Throughout the year we follow aspects of Christian calendar.

Via use of the Roots and Fruits books we are able to deliver our collective worship sessions in a way that caters for different learning styles. Teachers are encouraged to relate the biblical stories to real life situations that our pupils and their families may face at home and in school.  The use of Picture News also helps pupils to consider the plight of others across the globe.

Autumn 1

When we think about generosity we usually think about being generous with money or possessions. However, we can also be generous with our time, our gifts and our abilities. Generous people often say that they receive much more than they
give. Perhaps this is because when someone is generous to us, it makes
us want to be generous in return. The opposite of being generous is being selfish. What kind of person would you prefer to have as a friend?

Autumn 2

Compassion is about 'standing in someone else's shoes' when they are having a hard time.  ln other words, trying to understand how they might be feeling and doing our best to try
to help.

Being courageous can mean different things to different people. For example, one person may think it easy to speak in front of a large audience, whilst another would need to find lots of courage to do this. Everyone faces
challenges from time to time, and we have to find courage to overcome them.

Everyone makes mistakes, it’s part of being human. Sometimes our mistakes hurt others and then we need to say sorry. Sometimes mistakes made by other people hurt us. When this happens we need to be able to forgive.
Forgiveness can be difficult and costly but without it a new start is impossible.

Summer 1

Learning to be a good friend, someone who can be trusted and is loyal, takes a lifetime.
Talk together about how friends come in all shapes and sizes. Some are young, some are old. Some are always there, some we see only occasionally.

Summer 2

We are learning at school about the importance of treating others with respect even if we sometimes do not agree with the way they behave or the things they say. We have also been thinking about how we should treat the things that belong to us and to other people respectfully.
